Use data driven and digital approaches for

  • Applied research for optimising the functioning of the food systems
  • Improved practice transfer and food system outcomes
  • High level training and capacity building for sustainable food systems management

For the certificate in data science, students will have access to content from the AI & Data Science Certificate Hohenheim (AIDAHO), providing them with key competencies in artificial intelligence, scientific computing, and data science. To successfully complete the certificate, students have to pass at least five AIDAHO modules. There are three mandatory basic modules that all participants have to complete. The courses of these modules teach basic programming skills and statistical methods. In the two semi-elective specialisation modules, the students can either deepen their methodological skills or choose to work on data projects in application seminars. The electives are described in more detail in the relevant part of the proposal, with those offered by the African partners in the first instance being code-shared into the AIDAHO certificate. These include courses currently on offer in UWC’s Master’s programme in Data Science, for example on the advanced internet of things, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. A taught Master’s in AI is currently under development at UWC, on which the Graduate Centre would also be able to draw further down the line. The basic compulsory courses would be taught online through some pre-recorded content and in-person tutorials, mainly by the German research chair, with further content and tutorial support being shared between UHOH and the Africa partners.
