Call for Research Topics - Food Systems & Data Science - Deadline extended until Nov. 7th!  [31.10.25]

UKUDLA has extended the deadline for submitting research topics! The new deadline is 7 November.   We are offering scholarships to candidates from Africa (who will be affiliated with a partner university at the Centre) and Germany (who will be affiliated with Hohenheim University). An important requirement for 'German' candidates is that: They must have German nationality or permanent residence status.

Call summary and action:

We are now inviting scientists from Hohenheim University to suggest research topics that PhD candidates will then be able to apply to work on.
Who to target: Faculty members from disciplines related to food systems (e.g. agriculture, nutrition and economics) and data science (e.g. statistics, AI and machine learning). 
Core requirement: Suggested topics should reflect the integration of data science with food systems.

  • Scholarship information for German candidates affiliated to Hohenheim: 36 months (basic scholarship period) + 6 months (optional extension), €1,800 per month at the UKUDLA Centre in Southern Africa. Up to 12 months of the total period can be spent in Germany (€1,300 per month). The scholarship includes three round-trip international travels for the PhD candidate and three supervision travels to the Centre. Additional research funds for the PhD project, e.g. for equipment, labour costs, consumables, local travel and conference visits, can be applied for in a reasonable amount.
  • The deadline for submitting research topics is 7 November 2025.
  • Context: Submitted topics will be published online for PhD scholarship applicants to choose from. The PhD candidate call will be launched in mid-November 2025 and will remain open until 31 December or until the positions are filled.
  • The expected start date of the project is: February–April 2026.
